Work Desk Feng Shui: Where to Position Your Desk for Office and Work From Home

TL;DR: Good work desk feng shui starts with two things: the energy of your premises, which decides where the desk should go, and your favourable directions, calculated from your birth details, which decide which way you face.

Sit where you can see the door, but never directly in line with it or with your back to it.

Work desk feng shui comes down to two questions: where the desk sits in your premises, and which way you face when you sit at it. The first depends on the energy of the premises. The second, and the more important, depends on your favourable directions, calculated from your birth details. The general points below, from solid backing behind your chair to keeping clear of aircon vents, apply whether you work in a corner office, at an open-plan hot desk or in a converted HDB study.

Which direction should you face at your work desk?

Face one of your favourable directions. In a feng shui consultation, your birth details are used to calculate your Ming Gua, which shows your favourable and unfavourable directions for working and sleeping. Where the desk sits within the room is then decided by the energy of the premises, so no single layout rule suits every person or every office. The general points in this guide, such as solid backing and a clear view of the door, apply on top of that.

Should your desk face the door?

Face the room with the door in view, on a diagonal. A desk facing door directly, so you look straight into the entrance, puts you in the path of every arrival, while sitting with your back to the door is traditionally considered worse.

The ideal feng shui office desk position is diagonally opposite the entrance, with a wall behind you. If you must sit with your back to the door, a high-back chair adds support and a small mirror on the desk lets you see who approaches. If your desk facing door alignment is unavoidable, place a plant or a low cabinet between the desk and the doorway to soften the line.

How do you apply office feng shui in an open-plan or hot-desk office?

Choose your seat rather than your ornaments. Much of the office feng shui Singapore workers deal with today happens on open-plan floors and hot desks, where the furniture is fixed but the seat choice is yours.

  • Pick seats with a wall, partition or cabinet behind you over seats backing onto a walkway.
  • Avoid desks directly under beams or at the end of a long corridor.
  • Avoid sitting where the sharp corner of a pillar points at you.
  • Avoid sitting directly under an aircon vent, as you become more prone to body aches and falling sick.

Good office desk feng shui on a hot desk is mostly about these small, portable choices made each morning.

Where should the boss sit in a feng shui office layout?

Deep inside the office, away from the main entrance, in the commanding position. In a classical feng shui office layout the decision-maker sits where they can see the room and the door, with a solid wall behind them.

A boss room should not sit next to the main door, share a wall with the toilets or place the desk under a beam. The desk should face into the room, not out of the window with the door behind. These are decisions best made at fit-out, which is why our business feng shui service reviews key personnel positions alongside the overall plan. That is why position comes before paint. A red wall cannot rescue a desk with a busy corridor behind it.

How should you set up a work-from-home desk in an HDB study room?

Put your back to a solid wall and face into the room, not into a wall. Working from home is no longer temporary. In a November 2025 parliamentary reply, the Ministry of Manpower reported that 38.4% of employers offered scheduled tele-working in 2024, compared with 6.9% in 2019.

Most HDB study rooms are compact common rooms, so the typical setup is a desk pushed against the wall under the window. That leaves you facing a blank wall with your back exposed. Where the room allows, turn the desk so your back is to the solid wall, the window is to your side and you face one of your favourable directions. If the desk must face a wall, hang an open landscape artwork above it to give the eye some depth. If the study doubles as a guest room, avoid facing the bed while you work, and keep work papers off the bed itself.

What about a desk in the bedroom?

Keep the bed and desk visually separate with a low shelf or screen, and close the laptop fully at the end of the day so the room returns to rest.

When should you set up or move into a new office?

Once the layout is right, timing comes next. Many business owners choose an auspicious date for the move and follow a set move-in procedure for business before the first working day.

Get Your Work Desk Feng Shui Right from the Start

Strong work desk feng shui comes down to facing one of your favourable directions, calculated from your birth details, and placing the desk to suit the energy of your premises: solid support behind, open space ahead, a clear diagonal view of the door and no aircon vent blowing directly on you. Get those right and decor becomes a matter of taste. Feng shui is a traditional practice that supports a focused working environment, not a guarantee of business results.
