TL;DR: The best feng shui bedroom layout puts the bed in the commanding position: a solid wall behind the headboard and a clear view of the door, without lying directly in line with it.
Then remove what disturbs rest: mirrors facing the bed, beams overhead, and a headboard sharing a wall with a toilet.
A good feng shui bedroom layout starts with one decision: where the bed goes. In Singapore the challenge is space. According to HDB’s Key Statistics 2024/2025, 76.0% of the resident population lived in HDB flats at end-March 2025, which means most of us are fitting a queen bed, a wardrobe run and often a desk into a room where the textbook position is simply not available.

Where should you place your bed for good feng shui?
Place the bed in the commanding position. That means the headboard rests against a solid wall, you can see the bedroom door while lying down, and the door is diagonal to you rather than straight in front of your feet.
Correct feng shui bed placement follows a simple order of priority. Protect the headboard wall first, because support behind you matters more than any decorative remedy. A window behind the bed is the most common compromise in condo master rooms. Next, leave walking space and a bedside table on both sides. Finally, check what sits on the other side of the headboard wall. A toilet, kitchen stove, lift shaft or refuse chute behind your head is worth moving the bed for, even if the new position feels less convenient. If you are still at the planning stage, our home feng shui consultation reviews these walls before the carpentry is built.
“The key factors are the location and direction of your main door, the stove (as it affects the family’s wellbeing) and the individual occupant’s bed.”

Is bed facing door feng shui really that bad?
Yes, feet pointing straight out of the door is a position traditional practice consistently avoids. It is often called the coffin position, and it leaves the sleeper directly in the path of energy rushing through the doorway.
The fix for bed facing door feng shui is usually to shift, not to rebuild. Slide the bed a little so the door sits on a diagonal, or rotate it to a different wall if the room allows. When neither works, which is common in a compact HDB common room, place a solid footboard or a low bench at the foot of the bed to create a buffer. Keep the door closed while you sleep.
What if the bed faces the toilet door?
Keep the attached bathroom door shut at all times, fit a door closer if family members forget, and add a fabric curtain where space allows.
Where should mirrors go in a feng shui bedroom?
Keep mirrors out of the bed’s reflection. A mirror that reflects you while you sleep is believed to keep the room restless, and in a feng shui bedroom it is one of the easiest problems to solve.
Mirrored wardrobe doors are the usual culprit in HDB and condo master rooms. Mount the full-length mirror on the inside of a wardrobe door instead, or angle a free-standing mirror so it faces a side wall.
What can you do about a beam over the bed?
Move the bed so no beam runs above your head or across your body. Structural beams cannot be removed, so the solution is always furniture placement around them.
Many HDB flats have a beam along one bedroom wall, which is why we flag it at floor plan stage in our guide to reading a BTO floor plan. If the bed must sit under it, a false ceiling or built-in headboard cabinet that boxes the beam in is the usual renovation answer.
Is a storage bed bad feng shui?
No, not if you use it well. Storage bed feng shui is really about what you put inside the drawers, not the bed frame itself.
Under-bed storage is a necessity in small Singapore bedrooms, so keep the contents calm and soft: spare bedding, linen and out-of-season clothes. Avoid old paperwork, broken items, shoes or anything sharp directly beneath where you sleep, and air the drawers out every few months.
How do you fix a compact common room versus a master bedroom?
The principles are the same, but the problems differ. Common rooms struggle with space, while master rooms struggle with attached bathrooms and full-height windows.
| Room type | Common problem | Practical fix |
| HDB common room | Only one wall fits the bed, and it faces the door | Footboard or bench at the foot of the bed, door kept closed |
| HDB common room used as a study | Desk and bed compete for the solid wall | Give the solid wall to the bed, place the desk side-on |
| Master bedroom with attached bathroom | Bathroom door faces the bed | Keep it shut, add a door closer or curtain |
| Condo master bedroom | Window or glass wall behind the headboard | Tall solid headboard, blackout curtains drawn at night |
What else improves positive energy placement in a feng shui bedroom?
Reduce stimulation. Good positive energy placement feng shui bedroom advice is mostly about removing what keeps the mind active at night.
- Keep work files, laptops and exercise equipment out of sight, or out of the room.
- Clear clutter from the top of wardrobes and the space under the bed.
- Use bedside lamps on both sides to keep the arrangement balanced.
Traditional practice also considers each person’s favourable sleeping direction, calculated from birth data. Homeowners overseas can get that personal layer through an online feng shui consultation.
Plan Your Feng Shui Bedroom Layout Before You Renovate
Settle your feng shui bedroom layout before the wardrobe and headboard are built in, because moving a bed is free but moving carpentry is not. Start with the bed, check the walls around it, then fix mirrors, beams and storage. Feng shui is a traditional practice that supports a restful home, not a guaranteed outcome. Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best feng shui bed placement in a small HDB bedroom?
Against the most solid wall, with a diagonal view of the door. If the only option faces the door, add a footboard or bench.
Is bed facing door feng shui acceptable if the door is always closed?
Keeping the door closed helps, but shifting the bed to a diagonal is the better fix where the room allows.
Is a storage bed feng shui friendly for a master bedroom?
Yes, if the drawers hold soft, orderly items such as bedding and linen rather than clutter.
Does positive energy placement feng shui bedroom advice differ for each person?
The layout principles apply to everyone. Favourable sleeping directions are personal and calculated from birth data.
