What is the Day Master in a BaZi reading?
Find the day pillar, then look at its top character. That is your Day Master, and it represents you.
Every other character in the chart is read as a relationship to it. This is the single most important idea in BaZi, because it explains why generic zodiac forecasts rarely land. Two people born in the same animal year almost never share a Day Master. There are ten possible types, formed by pairing the five elements with yin and yang: Yang Wood, Yin Wood, Yang Fire, Yin Fire, and so on down to Yin Water.
Consultants also assess whether your Day Master is strong or weak, which simply asks whether the rest of the chart supports you or presses on you. Neither is good or bad, but they call for opposite advice, which is why two people born in the same year get told different things.
What do the four pillars in a BaZi chart represent?
Eight characters, arranged as four columns of two. Each column is a pillar built from your birth year, month, day and hour.

The month pillar carries the most weight in most schools, because it sets the seasonal context your Day Master was born into. The day pillar matters for a different reason: your Day Master sits on top, with the spouse palace directly beneath, which is where partnership questions get read.
What are the Ten Gods in a BaZi chart?
The name is misleading. They are not deities. They are labels describing how each character in your chart relates to your Day Master, and they come in five pairs.

A chart heavy in output and light in structure usually belongs to someone who creates well but resists being managed. This is why BaZi is used for career direction and hiring decisions, not only for fortune telling.
Why does a BaZi reading change every ten years?
Your birth chart is fixed. What moves is the environment around it.
Luck Pillars are ten-year cycles layered over the fixed birth chart, each changing which elements are reinforced or suppressed. On top of that sits the annual pillar. That is why a consultant discusses your current decade and this year as two separate layers.
This layering is the same logic behind selecting auspicious days for a move, a signing or an opening. The question is always what conditions are meeting your chart at that moment.
Worth saying plainly: a chart is not a verdict. It describes tendencies and timing, not fixed outcomes.
Why does birth time matter so much for a BaZi reading in Singapore?
Because the hour pillar sits on two-hour blocks. Get the time wrong by thirty minutes and you can land in the wrong block, which changes a quarter of your chart.
Singapore makes this unusually tricky. The country ran on GMT+7:30 from September 1945 until 31 December 1981, then moved thirty minutes forward to GMT+8 on 1 January 1982, following Malaysia’s synchronisation, as recorded in the National Archives of Singapore.
So anyone born here before 1982 has a birth certificate time that needs correcting before the chart is drawn. Clients born overseas need the same check against their birth country’s historical time. Singapore birth certificates do record time of birth, so the raw figure is usually easy to retrieve. The correction is the part that gets skipped.

What does BaZi compatibility actually compare?
Chart against chart, not animal against animal.
Proper BaZi compatibility examines both people’s day pillars and spouse palaces, whether their elements complement or compete, and what happens when the two charts meet. Practitioners look for combination, clash, punishment and harm between the branches. Two people whose animals are traditionally “compatible” can produce a poor match, and two supposedly clashing animals can balance each other well.
It is not only for marriage. The same method is used for business partnerships, key hires and choosing a wedding date.

The terms are learnable. Interpretation is where the value sits, because a chart is read as a whole, not as a checklist of parts. A BaZi reading tells you about the person; feng shui handles the space they live and work in, and most BaZi Singapore consultations end up using both.
